wimbledon queue card

This is a Queue Card from 2015 from my first trip with my first Godson and nephew Aaron Byrnes. Shortly after returning I was diagnosed with cancer. The goal was to return when recovered. We eventually returned in 2018 following a lucky lottery selection through the Wimbledon draw. We got to witness 15 year old Coco Gauff break onto the  professional women’s tennis scene. Coco inspired my thirteen year old nephew to believe in your sporting dreams by developing a growth mind-set and strengths based approach. Aaron is now a Munster Rugby Interprofessional and  plays for the Under 18’s side.

Practising gratitude and counting my blessings keeps me balanced.  This piece ‘Begin each day with a Grateful Heart’ represents teaching and learning during the pandemic. I call it my Embroidery Resilience Shield and I made it with my embroidery teacher Miriam Quinlan.  It was made while my cousin was expecting her first baby Noah Duggan and took the length of her pregnancy to create.  It serves as a reminder to be grateful for the gift of family, friendship and resilience in a post pandemic world.

The photo is of my nephew Aaron Byrnes’ first time playing Junior Cup rugby at Thomond Park Stadium, Limerick. It was the last match his school team played before the pandemic struck in February 2020. I gained an excellent vantage point for this shot by accidentally entering a wrong entrance and ended up in the players tunnel in front of the pitch before kick off! Come on Ard Scoil Ris, Limerick..!

Know your worth Quote: Greater education is needed about the side effects of female cancer treatment in the workplace. Legislation is required to assist women experiencing menopause to remain in the work place following cancer treatment. Appropriate resources must be given to employers to facilitate an effective return to work process. No woman should have to give up their job due to the menopause. I forfeit my pension, salary protection and permanent teaching position in the fight for equal pay and working conditions for women in Ireland in the teaching profession.
